NCMR 2008: Bill Moyers Speech
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 06/08/08 at 05:06:23 amThe National Conference for Media Reform is in full swing in Minneapolis this weekend. Unfortunately I didn’t make it down to the convention center to experience the discussions and workshops first hand but Free Press is uploading videos of the featured keynotes and speeches. Here is yesterday’s keynote from legendary journalist Bill Moyers –
Absolutely Stunning.
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 05/27/08 at 09:05:54 pmOne of my favorite artists, Scott Hansen AKA ISO50 released a beautiful print this morning. The artwork is for Barack Obama’s campaign in a new project called “Artists for Obama”. The print entitled “Progress” is limited to 5000 and can be purchased for $70 from the Obama campaign store. 70 bucks is a little steep for an ISO50 print (I own a couple of his other works) but all of the proceeds go to the Barack Obama for President Campaign.
You can check out some of the other truly amazing works of art ISO50 has created here.
Today, Blogger’s Unite for Human Rights.
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 05/15/08 at 07:05:39 pmYou may have noticed the banner on my front page this past week for the Bloggers Unite initiative. Blog Catalog and Amnesty International have teamed up to harness the power of the blogosphere in efforts to make the world a better place. Today, 1000’s of bloggers around the world will be promoting the project or writing about the different human rights issues.
I figured instead of blogging about a topic I don’t know a whole lot about I would reserve the evening to educate myself on the many human rights issues that are occurring around the world. Amnesty International has put together a page featuring a listing of devastating human rights problems that are complete with detailed information, articles, and goals for each issue, I encourage everyone to take a look.
When will Global Warming be the cause?
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 04/26/08 at 09:04:00 amIt’s April 26th and I woke up to about an inch of snow outside, we got off lucky. Parts of MN will get up to 18 inches of snow over this weekend meaning there will be plenty of snow on the ground into May. It’s supposed to be summer in about a month and we’re still getting a seemingly endless stream of winter weather, why?
It’s not because it’s Minnesota, our normal 6 month winters are long enough. This year we’re looking at 8 months infected by freezing temperatures and snowfall leaving us with 4 months of decent warm weather. Why even bother filling the pool? Or taking down the Christmas lights for that matter. The local news can blame it on cold fronts lingering over Canada all they want, most of Canada is experiencing warm spring weather right now. This is just another real-life example of Global Warming and its toll on normal weather patterns and this time around we just so happen to be in the middle of it all.
You might ask how Global Warming could cause more winter weather, it’s supposed to be warming right? Every time it snows in MN I find myself reading countless blogs and articles that say Global Warming isn’t real because there’s snow. People need to understand that Global Warming doesn’t mean that every particular location on the Earth will get warmer, some areas may get colder as weather patterns shift. This article explains how Global Warming increases the overall water temperature in the Great Lakes which in turn increases the gap between water temperature and air temperature making it ideal for snowfall, and that’s just one example.
People who still deny the existence of Global Warming amuse me, I’m wondering how long it will take before the local news mentions the possibility of these out-of-the ordinary weather conditions actually being caused by something other than mysterious pressure systems from Canada.
Global Warming: Everything you need to know.
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 04/14/08 at 08:04:25 pmBy a show of hands, how many of us have seen this commercial aired on television in the last few weeks?
The commercial is for WeCanSolveIt.org, a nonprofit, nonpartisan campaign founded by Nobel Laureate and former Vice President Al Gore. The ‘We’ Campaign was put together by The Alliance for Climate Protection whom is a group dedicated to expressing the importance and urgency of adopting and implementing an effective and comprehensive solution for our ever growing climate crisis.
Don’t be surprised if I reference this website more often in the future as it offers loads of resources and information about what we can do to better our environment. You too can help drive friends, family, community, corporations, and government to get involved in solving the climate crisis, visit WeCanSolveIt.org to learn more.
Earth Hour 2008: Join a global movement in energy conservation.
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 03/29/08 at 11:03:17 amThe above video pretty much explains what Earth Hour is all about. Tonight, massive cities and huge corporations all around the world will participate in a unified effort to raise awareness about our global needs. It doesn’t stop there - You too can take action by getting involved with the Earth Hour movement or just simply by turning off lights, computers and appliances tonight at 8PM for a mere 60 minutes.
Jon Lee blogged about Earth Hour earlier today which is how I learned about it, he points out how even technology companies like Google are raising awareness for this event.
You too can easily do your part by spreading the word to family and friends. Turn off the lights tonight at 8PM.
NCMR 2008 in Minneapolis, MN June 6-8th
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 03/26/08 at 06:03:10 pmThe National Conference for Media Reform (NCMR) is coming to Minneapolis, Minnesota this June 6th through 8th. NCMR is put together by FreePress.net which is the same organization that coordinates the efforts behind the SavetheInternet.com Coalition for Network Neutrality. NCMR is an event for everyone from concerned citizens and activists to educators and journalists who are calling for change in our nation’s media system.
The people who know me personally should know that I’m a firm believer in media reform and with NCMR in Minnesota this year I just might drop the cash for registration. Passes aren’t cheap but right now they are offering early bird discounts until the end of March, scholarship opportunities are also available for those who qualify.

Tuesday’s Minnesota DFL Caucus
Posted by Markus Langenfeld - 02/07/08 at 03:02:07 pmTuesday or “Super Tuesday” as it was referred to by the media was the big day for Minnesotans among many other states for caucus and primary presidential voting. I did vote in the 2004 general election but this was my first primary experience. Since I’m a registered democrat and I wanted to vote for a democratic candidate I attended the Rush City/Rushseba Township Precinct DFL Caucus after work.
The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) is Minnesota’s own arm of the national Democratic Party. I was surprised that they covered so many different subjects at the meeting, I didn’t expect that they would also focus on issues outside of the ‘big picture’ and the presidential election such as the resolutions and changes that have a direct impact on our community. I feel bad that I didn’t stay for the whole thing but at the same time I felt like I was going to get roped into something if I showed interest in what was going on. I don’t need any new responsibilities but it was a good experience nonetheless.
I’d hate to make politics a popular topic of discussion on here but I’ve definitely found more interest in the whole process of selecting a new leader of the free world, and up to this week I had no idea of how important the primary elections are to the whole process.
