4,000 miles and 8 loads later.

October 20th, 2008 by Markus Langenfeld

So far October has been a big month for me, there’s just so much going on in life right now. I wanted to do an entry to summarize what I’ve been up to, and hopefully I’ll have some time to get back to regular blogging soon as it’s been difficult to do so lately.

I had the road trip at the start of the month. We departed Minnesota after I got off work on Monday the 6th and we arrived in Denver, Colorado Tuesday afternoon for lunch, then Grand Jct. Colorado on the other side of the Rockies for dinner. Instead of sleeping, we continued onto Las Vegas, Nevada arriving at about 5:00am CST Wednesday. After very little sleep we did the tourist thing in Vegas, including visiting a few of the big casinos like the MGM Grand, Treasure Island, and The Venetian. The pirate show at Treasure Island was awesome, I also wanted to check out the Freemont Street Experience later that night but we were all so tired from walking the entire strip that we ended up spending most of the evening at our own hotel.

We left Las Vegas Thursday afternoon and we crossed the Hoover Dam into Arizona during the day but by the time we were nearing the Grand Canyon it was dark outside so we had to skip it. I guess it was good that we saved the drive time because we didn’t arrive into Albuquerque until almost 4:00am Friday morning.

Chris' Wedding

The basis of the whole trip was the wedding in Albuquerque, which ended up being a beautiful ceremony at a country club in Rio Rancho. It was a lot of fun to see a good friend of mine get hitched with the person he loves. I know Tiffany well enough to say that she has to be one of the sweetest most genuine people I know and they make a perfect couple together. However, outside of the wedding my recollection of that night gets a little fuzzy. I went out with some friends after the reception and all I remember was my introduction into the world of Jäger-bombs and arm wrestling with some Mexicans at about 1:00am. My shoulder is still sore.

The next morning we had to be up bright and early for the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, the only problem was the combination of moderate winds, cold weather, and the looming chance of rain had the mass ascension cancelled. So we basically went to the balloon fiesta park to browse some vendor booths and buy a newspaper. After a quick breakfast at Blake’s Lotaburger (which turns out to be excellent hangover food, that is before I smashed my head on the metal umbrella outside) we we’re on our way back to Minnesota. We left Albuquerque at around noon on Sunday and we arrived at home around the same time the next day.

So the big road trip quickly came to an end and it’s all done and over with. I’m a little bummed that we had to skip so many things that I wanted to see, but by the end of the trip I was ready to come home. However I have to admit, I’d much prefer the scenery and climate of the southwest over my home state, it really is beautiful down there.

Once we were back, we had to start the task of moving all of our belongings into the new house. With the help of family and friends, over 8 loads of stuff jammed into cars, trailers, and pickup trucks, and 2 dumpsters filled to the top with junk I’m finally moved into the new place. This past weekend was dedicated to packing like a refugee, moving, unpacking, and sorting. My new office is already half way set up and I have my bedroom to where it’s at least livable. I have high-speed internet as of Friday and I’ll get my DirecTV back on Wednesday. I should be completely unpacked in the new place by the end of the week so theoretically I should be able to enjoy some real R&R by this weekend. Maybe.

So just to recap we have the road trip and we have moving into a new house. As if all of that wasn’t enough I picked up a serious freelance project creating a website and we have all sorts of stuff going down at the office. Extreme time management for the win, I can’t wait to fit in sleeping.

It was great having you out again. Glad you could make it. Since you missed the balloon fiesta, you’ll just have to come out again next year to check it out :)

Couldn’t have been a good year to go with all the deaths and all….

Also, a shout out to the nerd-core. You guys really like to fulfill the stereotypes don’t you

    Deaths?

I was pretty buzzed in that picture, I mean I look completely insane, but I had a few drinks by that time.

the balloon festival had some issues, a balloon hit power lines, couldn’t be much of a festival atmosphere with all that going on.

Oh right, yeah that was pretty crazy to see on the news while sitting in my hotel room just miles away.

The weather killed the balloon fiesta, the weather was crappy and very un-desert-like. From what I’ve heard accidents like that are pretty typical.
