‘GOOD’ Magazine: Pay what you want.

September 26th, 2008 by Markus Langenfeld

GOOD Magazine

GOOD Magazine is doing an experiment, very similar to what Radiohead did a while back. You can pay whatever you want for a 1-Year magazine subscription and all of the subscription money goes to a non-profit organization of your choice. You can give them $1.00 to $1000.00, whatever you think its worth.

They are planning to use this business model until at least October 22nd, or longer depending on how it works out. GOOD Magazine relies on social marketing and word of mouth for advertisement which is obviously one of the reasons why they’re doing this. But the fact that you can get a GOOD magazine for a GOOD price and the money goes to a GOOD cause makes it worth mentioning.

Here is the problem with that scheme. I like it, I do, but after it loses its Wow What a cool Idea factor, I don’t think it works. Good has done something by doing the non-profit tie-in, that is a nice revolution of the idea… however, when people say the whole music industry should try doing what radiohead did I just slap my head.

Just as a followup to this I just received my first issue today. The magazine is pretty awesome, it’s like Current (the television network) in magazine form.
