Something for the New Year.

I thought I would whip up something to kick off 2007. It isn’t anything too out of the ordinary but I think it looks sharp. I made a few content changes around the site, updates and such. Just an overall fresh beginning…

Anyone who knows this site knows that I change the layout on a nearly monthly basis, so I’m not sure how long it will look like this, no guarantees. But this version should be special; I mean it is an even number after all.

Welcome to MLDOTCOM Version 20 …. Point 1!

Christmas time has come and gone.

It seems like Christmas takes just forever to arrive, and then comes and goes in an instant. All of the planning, shopping, baking (surely not on my part) that is done to prepare for maybe 24 hours worth of joyous festivities. I wish it could be Christmas every day…

It went well though, everyone liked their gifts and we all had a lot of fun as always. I know I received all sorts of neat items, of which I list in This Thread on . It was good times.

The worst part is going back to work, and facing real life again. The good part about this week is that its cut short, it’s almost as if I’m being weaned off the ecstasy that is Christmas and placed back into a normal frame of mind.

It’s all a memory now, that is… Until next year.

Minibellum Project

I thought I would jot down some notes about a project I’m working on. I recently decided to replace my file server at home. The aging 600 MHz ‘Cerebellum’ with about 140GB worth of internal HDDs has been taken out and my 1.2 GHz Mac Mini, renamed ‘Minibellum’ with about 300GB of storage has taken its place. I’m trying my best to get as much use out of the Mini as I can; it seems like such a waste spending so much money on that thing and never using it. With the issues I was running into with Cerebellum, I thought about the small size, minimal power consumption, and rock solid stability OSX has to offer and decided that it would be perfect for the job.

Over the last couple weeks I’ve been getting into learning the innards of Mac OSX and the UNIX based Console system it’s using. To have the new Minibellum live up to Cerebellum’s standards in terms of what it can do for my home network, I have had to do a lot of configuration outside what the basic OSX GUI offers. Getting everything going such as the FTP server, remote administration, web server, and even basic file sharing with specific volumes (in this case the external HDD) wasn’t real easy when you leave OSX’s hand holding. However once I got everything going, maintaining and editing the configuration of everything was super nice.

Speaking of configuration, I’ve came across a couple pieces of free software that made implementation of network volume sharing and virtual users within the FTP capabilities very smooth. If your looking to use your OSX box as a file server, you need to check out Hornware: SharePoints and PureFTPd Manager.

All that’s left is a handful of small security issues I need to overcome, and then it should be good to go as far as opening it up for remote access and such…

Christmas Spirit

I’ve always been one to believe in a Christmas Spirit. As in, a joyful state or mood in which the coming of the holiday season excites me. If I don’t have this feeling, it seems that it all comes too sudden and goes away just as quick, which can get very depressing.

It’s almost like missing a bus, except the bus only comes once a year… and this bus pollutes the air with fumes of joy and giddiness. Or maybe it’s so good that the bus doesn’t pollute at all.. It’s powered by natural gas, like those busses in Atlanta…

Anyway, I’ve been trying to get back into the Christmas Spirit lately. I’ve been so busy with work and my car issues and everything that I’m forgetting that it’s only like a week and a half away. It just doesn’t seem like the holidays to me, jamming out to Christmas music at my desk, and wrapping gifts earlier then normal just isn’t doing it.

However I did manage to get my Christmas shopping done. I went to Mall of America last weekend to pick up a couple remaining items. I got some pretty neat stuff; I think everyone will be very happy this season. Not that they wouldn’t be happy anyway. I keep getting reminded that Christmas isn’t about gifts, I know I have went over my idea of what Christmas is really about, the gift giving is a big part of it to me. Giving being the key word, it just so happens that the circle of giving comes back to me.

I plan to bring home packing tape and cutting sheers from work. Its time for some Christmas physce meditation, while gazing into the oodles of gifts I’ll be wrapping.

Mmmmmm oodles.

PayPerPost

I don’t know if I mentioned this before but every once in a while I’ll throw a post on here which is sponsored by PayPerPost. I’m always interested in exploring new methods of doing things, new technology… In this case it happens to be advertisement.

Rather then having ads all over the site, why not blog about something that pertains to my interests and get paid for it? It would be neat to cover hosting costs and such off sponsored weblog posts, these advertisement posts may not be made obvious on the site, but it will be something I agree with, feel strongly about, or something I’m actually interested in.

So far it seems like a guaranteed source of some extra funds, the best part is that the earning potential can be as high as you’re willing to work for, or post for in this case. If you run a weblog, and a few extra bucks is something you may be interested in, check out PayPerPost.

Cars, Meetings, and Conventions.

What a week it has been. I’m sure the lack of posts over the past couple weeks has been noticed. Unfortunately there seems to be a good amount of bad times for me lately and I really do hate to sit here and rant about my sub-par experiences. I mean a lot of blogs out there are based around kids whining about their lives they have barely embarked on, and their pathetic socially manifested dysfunctions. That seems to be the sole purpose of many weblogs. I don’t want to be pathetic, and I don’t want that to be the purpose of this place.

However I did have a fairly important meeting yesterday in which I missed due to some very untimely car trouble. I’m hoping that the newly discovered problem with my means of transportation isn’t too serious, but I have a feeling it will be. I know that this would be the perfect time of the year for it…

I want to end this on a good note, and I do have some good news. I recently received a confirmation of my front row seat at the Keynote of Microsoft’s Ready for a New Day Launch Event. Ready for a New Day is the official launch event of the new Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Office 2007, and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. The tour hits Minnesota on Feb. 1st 2007. So I have plenty of time to get everything planned out so I won’t miss a second of this all day event. I’m really looking forward to some of the workshops and guest speakers that are attending, and getting my hands on a final release of Vista. If any of you readers (yes I’m talking to all 3 of you) are planning to attend this event, or will be in the Minneapolis area on Feb. 1st and may be interested in going, let me know.

Ugh.

It has been a very long week, I’m happy to see it come to an end. I just want to sit around the house and do nothing right now. It seems that if I’m not working or something on the weekend, I’m out somewhere or some event is going on. I might say this every weekend, but it will be nice to have some time to myself.

I try to bring myself to blog about something but it seems nothing out of the ordinary ever happens, well except for maybe what’s going on right now. For some reason when I try to go to Google.com, it brings me to Google.co.uk. I’ve tried different DNS IPs, different IPs from my ISP, other computers on the network, other browsers, settings, etc… Nothing seems to work, and it’s such an off the wall issue.

That’s how most of my problems in life are though. Even if it’s something small and dumb, it has to be something that no force in the world can troubleshoot. It’s ironic because I deal random issues all day long, that’s basically my job. I figure out problems that rarely seem to have a cause. There’s no manual, no script, it’s a lot of guesswork and frustration and somehow I can normally pull it off…

Why is it so difficult to troubleshoot myself? I am my own kryptonite.
