Red Hat creates social networking site

Ars Technica -
Prominent Linux distributor Red Hat has revealed a new open source social networking service called Mugshot. Designed to facilitate integration of live social interactivity into the desktop computing experience, Mugshot emphasizes communication and entertainment.

This article caught my attention right away. Red Hat hasn’t done much in a while and it’s interesting to see them getting into a market like this. It’s an amazing concept; if they can pull it off it would revolutionize the technology.

OMGBBQ

So far it’s been a nice holiday weekend, normally I’ll make a post on Sunday to review the past couple days however I work at a real office now so I have Memorial Day off work.

Yesterday we had a BBQ, sort of a belated birthday shindig. There was some good food including a scrumptious ice cream cake and I received some nice gifts, it was a lot of fun. I think I’m going to take it easy and try to keep cool today. It’s 93F outside right now. For you people down south that’s normal but up in Minnesota that’s getting a bit too warm.

Other then that there isn’t a whole lot going on, I received a new webcam over the weekend so I may put some kind of deal on the website for that. Also I should post a couple of these articles I’ve seen this week that others may find interesting. So check back soon.

Momma said they’s my magic shoes.

“Mama said they would take me anywhere.” The great thing about having a nasty cold like this and the swollen tonsils I’m experiencing right now I can do some awesome Forest Gump impressions.

It’s a bummer to have a cold on your birthday, yesterday was actually the big day and lucky for me the effects didn’t really strike until this morning so I got to enjoy the great food at the buffet. Yeah, the ‘rents and I decided to hit Grand Casino for the great buffet they have. I tested my wits with some of the poker slots while I was there too, I didn’t do well. This weekend it sounds like we will be having a shindig with the family for all of the various birthdays, my grandmother’s was on Friday and then Mother’s day just happened… I think we’re going to do a BBQ, and Cake! Yeah!

Anyway, I ended up calling in sick today, if I were to go in I would just end up spreading this to everyone and with all the running around I would feel even worse. So I’ll take the day to get some needed rest, and I’ll likely run a few errands, I need to go to the bank and such. Muh.

Liter Cola? Do we make Liter Cola?

What a great weekend, as always it’s going by quick but it’s nice to have a couple days to lounge around the house. I managed to get some cleaning done and some things caught up around the home.

I also started a little project, I’ve been asked to do a simple identity design and a homepage for a daycare that’s being started. So yesterday I whipped something up that should serve its purpose well. They just wanted a page to display contact information and such, as soon as I find out what else to put on there I’ll make some changes. You can take a look by Clicking Here.

I made a few minor edits with the website here this weekend too. After a few months of the feedback spam issue going away it seems to have come back with a vengeance. I think I’ve set up the appropriate measures to stop it again with some new filtering methods and such so we will see how that goes. I also added a little more content to the new ‘About’ page, if you have nothing better to do check it out.

Skype Me

If you couldn’t tell VoIP technology has always been an interest of mine. Not only am I a Vonage customer but I’ve been a casual Skype user for quite some time now. *+geek ego* Until just recently I’ve only ‘Skyped’ with friends and family or had it around for the occasional business use. However after this week with the launch of free SkypeOut service, the ability to call any telephone in the United States and Canada free of charge, I can see myself using it more and more at both home and work. I think this is a bold move on their part, I’ve read over the business model they have going with this and it’s risky. They say it’s going to be free until at least the end of 2006, I assume if everything isn’t going as planned by then they will go back to charging X amount of cents per min for the service. I’m interested to see how it works out.

I do plan to have the software running more often. I went ahead and added one of those neat Skype buttons to the website. It can be found at the bottom of the new ‘About’ page. So if you have nothing better to do and want to drop me a line, Skype Me.

Skype offers fee-based live translation service

Ars Technica -
Skype is now offering live translation services of Skype or SkypeOut conversations. If you were hoping for some kind of voice recognition, machine translation mashup that would do the translation in real time, you will be sorely disappointed…

I was looking at some of the hardware Skype offers for business telecom and now seeing new features like this, it really shines a light on one of the many directions Skype plans to move into. This is a great article on the new feature.

Minor Updates

You may notice a few changes around the website. I wanted to present some of the content in another way while adding other features like a brand new ‘About’ section. I started out with a really long drawn out version of the about page that took me around 3 hours to type up and edit. That version can be found Here. After I was finished I decided I wanted something shorter and to the point. It’s a shame to throw away all of that work but the project didn’t turn out the way I had hoped.

I also took out the Contact page and merged that information into the new About page. I felt the Contact page lacked too much to be in it’s own section. I also did some clean up with the right side. I removed the ‘Interest’ links, some of which turned into buttons and went into ‘Flair’ and I got rid of the Flickr badge, I don’t update my Photo Weblog enough to warrant it so I’ll find another spot for a link.

I think that’s all I’m going to do for now, I may add a picture to the about page when I can figure out the CSS glitch I’m having…

Weekend Recap

What a nice weekend this has been. The weather was great; I had the chance to enjoy some of the outdoors… Actually I’m typing this on my notebook in my back yard right now.

Last night was fun too, I went out to the local theater and saw ‘RV’. I have to admit, I was a little hesitant to see it. It definitely seemed like it was going to be an entertaining movie but I wasn’t sure if it was worth seeing at the multiplex. I’m glad I did though, it was extremely funny and overall the story was far from overdone. Robin Williams did a great job in his role, he hasn’t been around in any of the recent movies so it was nice to see him again. I think ‘One Hour Photo’ is still my all time favorite Robin Williams movie though, he really does make a great creepy guy.

Before I forget, you may notice a new header on this here website. I thought I would whip something up. I think I’ll use that new logotype on future projects, I really like it. I think this may be my last header with this layout, I might change the colors around a little or something with my next revision. However I am impressed with the dramatic change it can make by doing such a minor edit.

Alright well, I think I’m going to try and take it easy for the last couple hours of my weekend here. It seems like I’ve been running around a lot the last couple days so of course the weekend just blew by. I’m not complaining though, I don’t dread the new job just yet.
