Back from shopping on EBay

February 1st, 2006 by Markus Langenfeld

So I’ve been looking at convergence handhelds for a while… Originally I wanted a Treo 650, but after seeing how overpriced they have remained I thought I would look into other options. Last night I started bidding on a couple Treo 600’s. I was going to accept the lack of features it had compared to the 650 and get a phone that had the basic features I want.

But after I thought about it it’s a real bummer that I’m going to get something less then what I have. I currently own a Dell Axim X5 PocketPC, its powerful, loaded with features, I even have a WIFI card for it. But somehow I find myself never using it.

So I thought to myself why not get a phone that’s a PDA, then I’ll use it all the time. So I ended up getting a wicked nice Hitachi SH G1000 PocketPC (See a picture Here.) It has a Intel XScale 400mhz processor, the same as my Axim, a built in camera, and all of the capabilities of a cell phone.

I got it at a heck of a price too. It’s amazing how fast the cost of technology goes down so rapidly. The G1000 was released in late 2003 with an MSRP of around $620.00. EBay in 2006? $170.00 I think I’ll be happy with it, it look’s like it has gotten rave reviews when it was released, I ordered it with UPS 2 day air so I’m hoping I’ll get my grubby paws on it before the weekend so I can use it at work. We will see what happens, expect a review soon.
