TiVo hardware may soon be free.

Tivo is trying to do everything they can to keep their business afloat, this seems like a drastic move that could either make or break their business. If I didn’t have a DishDVR I might do it. Check out the article Here.

Where have you been kid?

I guess it’s been a while since I’ve last posted. I’ve actually been extremely busy with the new job and things going on at home. I have the weekend off but I spent a lot of it shopping.

On Friday night we decided to pick up a new TV, it’s a Magnavox 52 inch RP HDTV. I’ll have some pictures up in the gallery by the end of the day. So far I’m really happy with this thing; I don’t think I’ll ever get over its massive size. I still need to get a good up converting HD DVD player but I have the current DVD player hooked up with composite and it looks pretty good. I had the chance to watch the Olympics in HD last night and all I can say is wow. It’s like your right there with them.

Yesterday I did some shopping at the mall and bought about $200 worth of new clothes. They we’re having a good sale so I bought a lot of stuff, nice stuff. I needed ‘office’ clothing desperately, the new job is picky with the dress code and even know winter still has about a month left they had a bunch of winter clothing at a good deal.

Like I said before the new job is keeping me busy, but so far I think I like it. It’s somewhat stressful, I have plenty of work to do and the day can sometimes go by real slow, but I’m not complaining.

A few people have asked about the new computer, so far I love it. It’s big and fast and it has run everything I’ve thrown at it with ease. I need to get a good video card for it, I almost bought one from Best Buy yesterday, it was a solid card and it wasn’t too insanely overpriced. But I decided to wait a week or so. I did however get some more ram for this beast; I decided to pick up another stick of 512 DDR2 for only 40 bucks! I know, Best Buy having a good deal on memory, you don’t see that too often.

I think that’s all I have so far, hopefully this week things settle down a little and I’ll have more time to spend with everything at home.

ThinkPad 260

So I heard a while back that Lenovo would be making a new ThinkPad notebook in a different color rather then the classic matte black IBM made them famous for. I saw an ad today for a website dedicated to this new notebook series and it’s built around votes for which it should be, the classic black or a new titanium color. Personally I think this is a great example of what Lenovo is going to do to a once killer line of business laptops. Sure it’s just a color change but what’s next? I do agree a titanium ThinkPad would be pretty wicked, however I’m never a fan of change so I voted for the black.
Just as the website says, It’s the way the ThinkPad should be. Check it out and make your vote at http://www.whichsideareyouon.com/

Life is looking up.

I know I’ve been kind of MIA lately, and there’s a good reason for it. I’ve been extremely busy with various aspects of life including landing a new job setting up a new desktop and internet… Lots of great things going on. I mentioned a new job; my first day of training is tomorrow actually. I’m now a proud employee of SatCom Communications Marketing LLC. The company does cable internet sales and installation scheduling for all of the major providers including Comcast, Time Warner, Roadrunner, Adelphia etc. I’m really looking forward to the change. I’ll get to be a day-walker once again with a normal 9-5 shift, the pay is going to be good, job details are great, and it’s going allow me to spend more time with my family and such.

I’ll have more details and a short review on the new computer and such in the near future when I get more time to think about what I’m typing but for now I’m going to get back to preparing for my day tomorrow.

d00d I got a dell..

So I’ve been looking at getting a new system with my tax return and after looking at building a system and various prebuilts I actually decided to get a HP with an AMD Athlon 3500+ off Compgeeks for around $570 with additional ram and such. The computer ended up selling out and I was forced to look into other options. So I looked at some coupon sites to see what kind of deals I could get on a Dell and I ended up picking a Dimension 5150 with a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4, 512 MB ram, SATA HDD, and free 17 inch Dell flat panel display for $605.00 shipped. I made sure the computer had PCIe so I can ditch the crappy integrated video for a decent card and I plan to add another 512 MB of ram too it shortly after getting it. It’s a bummer I’ll have to dump a little more money into it after getting it but it should scream when I’m done.

For those of you who know me you know I’m an AMD fan, why would I go Intel? Well first off I think I got this box at a heck of a deal. I was looking at some benchmarks and such for this chip and it seems like it should be beefy enough for everything I’m going to throw at it, also this particular chip (the P4 640) is known for it’s ease in over clocking.

So I guess we will see how my experience is with an Intel desktop, I’ve ran nothing but Intel notebooks and they seem to be pretty solid, but then again that isn’t saying much.

“/.”

The comments I received on Digg about my last post is a good reason why I don’t care to be part of a place like that. I have managed to find a new source for articles where the members are a bit more concerned about news and content rather then how they judge the content, This place is Slashdot.

Slashdot is a big community with a large dedicated user base, to me it’s always been a good source for reliable content. Personally, I think digg completely ripped off their concept from Slashdot so it’s almost as if I’m going back to ‘its roots’ sort of speak.

I also like the content on Ars Technica. I’ve been following the site’s growth and it’s become quite the tech news site. Don’t be surprised if I post a few good articles from there. However unlike Slashdot and Digg Ars Technicia isn’t considered a social news community.

Links to both Ars Technica and my Slashdot profile will be found under ‘Interest’ on the right side of this website.

I renounce my Digg membership.

As many of you know I’m a very anti-trend kind of person, I hate conforming to society’s standards and I’ll do everything in my power to stay away from them.

Digg.com is an example of something that was once great but has turned into something I don’t want to be a part of. It started out as a small project ran by the technologically famous Kevin Rose. Now it has become a premium social news community that has exploded with popularity, the content has become polluted with pointless blather and rants rather then educational current events happening in the tech world.

After Kevin Rose terminated his contract with G4 he announced that he would be spending time with his new IPTV show ‘Systm’ and he would also bring ‘thebroken’ back from the dead. The episodes of ‘Systm’ have been few and far between, and even though Kevin has promised over and over that he’s working on my personal favorite IPTV show ‘thebroken’ I have yet to see anything new.

What does all of this have to do with Digg? Digg has turned into Kevin’s flagship project due to its popularity, it has become a business. Because of this virtually no time has been spent with Revision3 and it’s projects. This may not bother most of Kevin’s fans but it does bother me, I’m taking action on my part by switching my primary news source to another site. Where the content matters, not just how much they can gain out of venture capitalists.

I’ve been with digg from the beginning, and I haven’t contributed any articles to the community, just lurked and dug what I thought was important like many others. However unlike most of the others my personal weblog hasn’t become a clone or shrine of Digg’s front page, I even paraphrased and added my own thoughts to every article I posted on my own site. That is something I can be proud of.

Check back to see which site I have decided to call home next.

Week in Review.

So I guess it’s been a few days, honestly not a whole lot has happened. On Monday I received my new handheld and after playing with it for a couple days I’m overall pretty happy with it. The company that sold it to me on the other hand could have done a better job. I received the PPC in sub par packaging, it was supposed to be a sealed retail box, it was far from. It came in a basic white box with the PPC in a plastic thing and everything else just thrown in there. It came with an aftermarket cable and no case or anything to help protect it, so I had to drop $ 40.00 on a case and screen protectors for it yesterday.
The company will be getting an email and a bad EBay rating but I doubt that will do anything, that’s just how life goes.

In other news, I’ll have the chance to get some stuff done today at home. I had yesterday and today off from work. I was hoping to be able to quit my job at the end of the week but it seems things have fallen through and I’ll have to bear with it a bit longer.

Actually I have a ton of stuff I need to get done today, I want to clean the house and my truck so I should stop wasting time and get dressed…
